After three years of using iPhoto, I just learned that there is a free photo editor on it. Since I don't have a nice camera, it often takes very dark, shadowed pictures. I am so excited that I can correct that to some extent now! I must not be very observant, though...seriously, the "edit" button has just been sitting there on iPhoto in totally plain sight. Glad I finally found it.
I looked back at some newborn pictures of my kids that were virtually unusable at the time because they were so dark or blurry. Here are the originals and the edited ones:
