Surprise Visit

One thing that has been kind of hard about moving away from our friends and family is that we oftentimes have to miss important or major events. Sometimes they are fun events--like weddings, showers, babies being born, or birthday parties. And sometimes they are not fun events...like my mom's surgery last week.

Rachel and I really wished we could have been there for my mom last Tuesday when she had foot surgery, but our classes at New Tribes started the day after that, so there was no way we could make the trip.

But when Nathan had the brilliant idea that Rachel and I should go surprise Mom with a visit on Saturday, we thought it was a great idea! Nathan and Aaron said they would stay here at New Tribes with the kids (except we took Abel) so that we could go. (Aren't they great??) We called my dad to make sure he thought it was a good idea and that my mom would feel up to a visit, and he said she would love it.

So Rachel, Abel, and I headed to our hometown in Indiana Saturday morning, and we arrived there around 11:00. When we got there, my dad told us that my mom was back in one of the bedrooms, laying with her foot propped up. We snuck back to the bedroom and stuck Abel around the corner so that my mom could only see him.

(This is a re-enactment, of course.)

She was VERY surprised. And shocked. And I think a little scared at first. (I mean, really...imagine laying down relaxing and all of a sudden totally out of the blue, your three-month-old grandson--who is supposed to be 150 miles away--appears in mid-air around the corner.) Ha.

After she got over her shock, we had a great day of talking and hanging out!

We even maneuvered her out to the deck for awhile to lay in the sun. :) And she got some quality time with Abel! (There are usually six other grandchildren vying for her attention.)

The bottom lines of this story: We have awesome husbands. And we love our mom.

Hope you recover quickly, Mom!
